Give us a little background on yourself?
I started my medical career in the beautiful island of Cuba where I was born and raised. I still retain strong Latin traditions and speak Spanish at home with our kids. I have been practicing internal medicine for the past 25 years and enjoy exercising regularly. My love for fitness made me develop a weight loss and fitness center in my office.
What made you decide to get into the medical field?
I went in to medicine because I enjoy working with people. I like helping people make a positive change in their lives, which is what got me interested in starting a weight loss clinic. We have seen some fantastic results with proper diet and behavioral changes.
How did you come about settling in Charleston?
My husband and I fell in love with Charleston when we first visited 25 years ago. We knew this is where we wanted to raise our children.
On the weight loss side of things, what are some of the biggest struggles that patients have when coming to see you?
The hardest thing for patients is to teach them to take control of their lives and health through diet and exercise.
What are some lifestyle changes you would like to see people make when wishing to lose weight?
We focus on getting people to stop eating fast food and making them aware of what types of food they are eating. We also emphasize portion control and eating to feel healthy, not eating to feel full.
Is it safe to say that the relationships you create with your clients are essential to their success?
A close relationship is essential to patients following a successful weight loss program. Patients need to have trust in their weight loss specialist to have a good outcome.
What healthy habits do you like to incorporate into your personal life that sets a good example for your patients?
We encourage patients to avoid fast foods, greasy foods and rich desserts. We also try to change their lifestyle eating habits so people consume the bulk of their calories early in the day and not late at night.
What do feel are some of the best ways that parents can begin to instill healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle in their children?
The best way parents can teach their children is to lead by example. If the parents value healthy eating and fitness, then many times the kids will follow.
