Angie Duncan and I had an amazing time hosting our first Oblique Fitgurls event at Chucktown Fitness in West Ashley on Saturday March 18. So many wonderful ladies came to the event, and it was a pleasure for us to meet everyone. Nelson Carroll led us through the gym’s Ultimate Workout Class, which is an hour class full of functional exercises. The class incorporates short bursts of cardio moves with strength exercises and promises to get your heart rate up so that you can torch fat. Nelson did a great job easing us into the workout though. With the music pumping, we started with a warmup involving high knees, side shuffles and jump squats, to name a few, and then moved into a yoga flow to get our muscles warmed up and ready for the workout.
What I like most about these functional classes is that you never spend a great deal of time on any one exercise. For this workout, Nelson split the class into groups; each group completed an exercise for time or number of reps, and then the group rotated to the next exercise. In one circuit, we were split up into three groups doing kettlebell swings, deadlifts with bent-over row combination and TRX pushups. Moving from a cardio move straight into strength exercises had our heart rates up! The workouts will vary per class and instructor, which is good because they are designed to incorporate a variety of exercises into each class. So, if you, like me, enjoy variety, you never have to worry about completing the same boring exercise over and over again.
Another really great component of functional group fitness classes at Chucktown Fitness is that fitness levels don’t matter. It’s not uncommon to be in a class with someone who is new to exercising along, someone who has been working out his or her entire life or others who are somewhere in between. The class is not meant to be a competition; it’s meant to be a challenge for each person. To achieve that goal, each person picks weights that work best for his or her fitness level and completes reps as quickly as possible within the time allotted. The competition is within you to push yourself as much as possible to get the best results from each class. That’s where Nelson comes in with his motivational phrases to pump you back up when it starts to feel tough. He encouraged us to keep going, to keep moving, to crush our workout. And we did. We had ladies from all fitness levels and all different types of backgrounds, and each one of them made it through the hour workout. I asked Nelson what he thought about the class, and he said, “I didn’t take it easy on those ladies. I brought the heat, and they handled it like champions.” They really did, and it was such a fun experience to workout with all of them. Thank you to Chucktown Fitness and Nelson for providing the space, class and FREE T-shirt!
