Amanda Grayson and I had a blast at HYLO Fitness for the last Oblique FitGurl’s event on Thursday, April 27. HYLO is a newer facility located in Mount Pleasant, and if you haven’t been there yet, you should definitely swing by. The facility itself is gorgeous and the type of training they offer is very unique. There are two studios at the facility — one for HY training, the other for LO. There were over 20 women at this event, so they broke us into two groups; we did a HYLO Fusion workout where half of us did 25 minutes of HY while the other group did 25 minutes of LO, and then we switched.
Trainer Liz led us through the LO workout. This is where my group started. The LO training is a blend of low-impact/intensity training that combines core strengthening movements and yoga, all on a balance board. At first, I felt like I could fall off this thing, so it was a little intimidating. But once you rock back and forth and engage your core, you become much more comfortable. Again, this is something you really have to experience yourself! Liz took us through 25 minutes of lower-impact, weightless toning exercises, as well as some yoga flow. I loved it, and a lot of other girls in the class felt the same way. We all got to that “shaky muscle” stage without too much fatigue. Landis Clayton, co-owner of HYLO speaks to what makes their studio so one of a kind: “The single most unique aspect of HYLO is that there’s nothing like it; not just in Charleston, but in the country. It’s a progressive step to merge so many different forms of boutique group training at a price point that redefines ‘value’ in the industry. We always get the question, ‘Are you a franchise, where are your other locations?’ This is it—this is the only HYLO, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!”
For the second half of our fusion workout, trainer Josh led us through the HY, which is the studio’s version of high-intensity interval training in its state-of-the-art facility. There are a series of bikes and rowers for the cardio stations, and the sculpt stations consist of dumbbells, battle ropes, benches and more. The vibe in the HY room is very cool. If you could envision a club-type environment with dimmed lighting, upbeat music and high energy, that was exactly the HY studio! We had only 25 minutes in there so he sent us straight to work! Half of our group started on a bike or rower, and the other half started in the back at the sculpt stations. It was easy to go through the intervals because there are TV screens throughout the studio displaying how long you are to spend in work and rest mode on your bike. The screens also displayed the workout sets the women were doing at the sculpt stations for easy reference. We really enjoyed rotating between stations and how well Josh kept us pumped up and motivated. He was a great class leader.
Once the workout was done, we ended with a little celebration. Thanks to Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe, we enjoyed some fabulous Greek food to go along with our delicious cocktails! Everyone knows that the best fitness events incorporate fun! Not to mention, it was a great opportunity for us to cool down after that awesome workout.
